December 2015

Month of December

Finally the end of the year is here. The most significant event of this month was the Fed interest rate increase to 0.25%. This was a much anticipated raise since many months ago so it wasn’t a surprise except no one knew when it would happen. That coupled with the fact that the commodities market went crazy. Crude oil fell below $40 for first time since 2009, natural gas dropped to a 16-year low and gold dropped to new 6-year low.

Perhaps this is a sign to continue to monitor the situation and look for entry opportunities. We should all agree that crude oil and natural gas are items which are still in use worldwide currently and hence there should be a limit to how low it can get. Gold is usually seen as a hedge against inflation and many Asians may like to purchase gold for their children.

On a personal note, I managed to get the letter of offer for my degree. This would mean that I would be considerably busy once classes start in March. That being said, I would still try to post as often as I can on topics I find interest in. The agreement for the BTO was also signed and this gives us time to plan for the costs of renovating, wedding and most importantly, the honeymoon.

After much consideration, I have decided to remove further portfolio details and transactions. While I initially wanted to use this platform as a motivation to constantly update my financial journey, I found myself wanting to show good results month after month that I was taking unnecessary risks on my accounts. I started to ignore my rules and it has caused a drastic shift in my account balance. That being said, the account has yet to be empty and I can still make a recovery. But I would not be posting my portfolios or transactions. I may from time to time post results of certain strategies which I have been trying out.

This would definitely help reduce the stress of trying to make good results on monthly postings and cause more errors in my positions.

November 2015 Portfolio

Month of November

The month of November! Although I have been waiting for this day to come, it saddens me to realise that all good things come to an end. The course which I had started back in March has already come to an end. On the last day, many of my batch-mates were very emotional and I as well, although I did not show it. That was also the reason I had not posted last week as I was rushing the last portion of the course for submission. That being said, I decided to ride on the momentum of curiosity and continue for my degree. I am still in the process of checking out the different university which offers my course and the price.

October 2015 Portfolio

Month of October
This month’s numbers was mixed up with the September post because that post was done later than expected. But nonetheless the overall effect is the same. The direction of market these few weeks are quite volatile without a clear uptrend or downtrend. So basically it’s a wait and see type of market.

Thoughts about Singapore Savings Bond (SSB)

I have finally completed the continuous test since March… Only things left to complete my course are checklists and group projects. This also means more time to read and write more posts.

So as the title of this post suggest, it’s time to think about the efficiency of Singapore Savings Bonds because of all the hype in the last couple of months.

September 2015 Portfolio

Month of September
September... The most awaited month of the year. This is the month where we have the annual Singapore Grand Prix. Most interesting event was the moment the safety car was activated because of the track intruder… This post was supposed to be up on the 3rd Saturday of the month which happens to also be The F1 weekend of Singapore. But I was involved with F1 and the photo uploads and so I had to postpone the posting till now.

August 2015 Portfolio

Month of August
The best thing this month was getting to choose our BTO. We manage to get the apartment that we wanted and she was so nervous and restless throughout the process.

I also attended a talk about Options by Manoj. I chanced upon his 1 day training through an online advertisement and will be writing more about the experience after my test this coming Wednesday. I only have positive comments about his training and had a wonderful time listening to his explanations.

The Amazing Effects of Compounding

Many may not have heard of the power of compounding. Some may not even know how powerful it can be. Here, I shall revisit the effects of compounding to serve as a reminder for myself and those who are interested.

July 2015 Portfolio

Month of July

Finally the month of July is passing. Hopefully, it brings with it the Greece debt crisis. Portfolio was also affected by the volatile markets and hence there was a loss in the future options department. On another note, the earnings are coming up from many companies and it is time to strike on the Earnings game (only if there are good deals).
We did manage to get a good double digit for the BTO released in May and with it, comes much more options to choose from compared with the previous BTO selection.

June 2015 Portfolio

Month of June

May did not present much of an opportunity with regards to stocks. I was hoping to get in on some deals but it did not do much. Greece default looms on the horizon and is affecting the US market. Singapore organised the 28th SEA Games and had the most medals of all countries which participated. New round of BTO came out and we applied for Canberra. Hoping the ballot number would be good as it was a hot project.

The Important Things in Life

Just recently I had a conversation with my colleague about what is most important in life. Everyone will have different opinions on what is most important to us. We mainly categorized them into either family or career (can have more but it depends from person to person).

May 2015 Portfolio

Month of May

OMG! An even faster May! Wasn’t expecting May to just arrive so quickly as well... The good news is that I manage to complete by 1st test with results that were above expectations. 8 more tests to go and I would have completed my course!

I also received the chance to choose a BTO that I applied for back in Nov 2014. However, I got a pretty big number and by the time it was our turn, there were only 5 choices left and we both did not want to be staying on the 2nd floor. Hence we decided to forfeit the chance. Seems we need to continue to look for BTOs that we are comfortable with.

And back to stocks, I have been looking at Singapore stocks for any drawback because this is the month of “Sell in May, go away”. If it come true, then I would be ready to jump on to get some stocks for a discount.

Apr 2015 Portfolio

Month of April

Somehow, this year seems to pass by so fast… before I realise it, it is already April…

I have not been posting as regularly as I would have liked mainly because I am enrolled in an in-house course by my company from March until the end of Nov. Hence, I would only post something if it is necessary or as a reminder to myself about the importance of certain subject.

I have not stop reading up on financial materials (books, blogs and news) as I believe it is important to continue to enhance my knowledge in case an opportunity strikes during my training period.

Leverage is a Double Edge Sword!

Leverage is a Double Edge Sword!

Leverage can assist in making a trade very profitable or make a huge loss if it goes another way. So what is leverage?

Mar 2015 Portfolio

Mar 2015 Portfolio

Month of March

A quarter of 2015 is just about to pass by. It seemed to pass by so quickly this year. :) I'm always looking forward to the next portfolio review as it allows me to know how I've done for the past month. I’m also looking forward to the end of the year to know how much I have progressed since last year. FED mentioned that rates will remain the same at least until the next few FOMC meeting. Might be a good sign but also means the outlook for a drop prices will be later than expected. In Singapore, the IT Show has just passed and I got a new laptop for myself (old one was showing signs of dying when i played games).

Updated 23/03/15: Although I do not care about politics, Singapore's first PM has passed away. Finally, he can be free from any pain and suffering. RIP LKY.

So this month I went into another 2 stocks after my AAPL got stopped out last month. These 2 were brought to my attention by my friends. After reviewing their financials and charts, I decided to go into them. ALK is basically an airline stock. It has been persistently earning despite all the competition (believe it or not…). TTWO is basically a game maker (mention Grand Theft Auto V and you will know it appeals to gamers).

Overall, there was a 2% growth since the last review which is not bad considering I did not concentrate much on stocks.

Options on Futures

3 positions expired this month earning me a total of $1502.50. This brings up my total returns YTD to 34%. Been waiting for a market correction but it doesn’t look like it is coming in the next few weeks. Hence I do not have a huge position for next month. If it turns out well, I would only collect about $260 for April unless I see an opportunity. Even if the correction doesn’t come until the end of the year (which I highly doubt), having 34% for 1 year is a good accomplishment. The idea is to not risk money in trades unless I have confident it will work out.
