May 2015 Portfolio

Month of May

OMG! An even faster May! Wasn’t expecting May to just arrive so quickly as well... The good news is that I manage to complete by 1st test with results that were above expectations. 8 more tests to go and I would have completed my course!

I also received the chance to choose a BTO that I applied for back in Nov 2014. However, I got a pretty big number and by the time it was our turn, there were only 5 choices left and we both did not want to be staying on the 2nd floor. Hence we decided to forfeit the chance. Seems we need to continue to look for BTOs that we are comfortable with.

And back to stocks, I have been looking at Singapore stocks for any drawback because this is the month of “Sell in May, go away”. If it come true, then I would be ready to jump on to get some stocks for a discount.

Stocks

I made a series of trades based on a few criteria during the earnings season and overall manage to make quite a handsome profit. This was a game of probability as all the trades were taken before earnings reports and sold shortly after they have reported. Obviously not all stocks were selected as there were a few filters in place.

Options on Futures

The results of this month look good as well. I realized I did not really sell my usual contracts of E-Mini S&P because I was afraid that “Sell in May and go away” would come true. But it leaded me to realize that Crude Oil was a more profitable trade.

Reason being that the margins required for the similar premium is actually lower! And it is easier to read the trends as compared to the US Markets. I am essentially capitalizing on the fact that many people are looking at crude oil closely because of the huge drop since the beginning of the year and betting that the oil will not go lower than my strike price which is normally between the ranges of $35-$50 (recently). And as we can all see, it is currently >$55 and doesn’t look to be coming down within the next 1-2 months.

Gold on the other hand, cost so much more margin to maintain the position. And this was after applying a strangle spread. For those who do not know what it means, simply google “strangle option”. It is 1 of the spread I use to limit my risk. Currently I am still holding Crude Oil, E-Mini S&P and Gold options which will expire in 1-2 months time.

Okay, I swear this is tougher to record than it looks. Because option selling is different from your normal equity accounts, I had been facing problems on how to properly chart my progress. That’s why in April I posted my cash flow for the account. While the cash flow was accurate, I realized my monthly expirations were not tallying. When I decided to do another check, I realized I forgot account for a few numbers in the previous months. Hence the table above started in Oct 14 again to illustrate the contracts which have expired during their respective months. After this post, my numbers will be monitored more closely to ensure it does not get missed out again. Nonetheless, the overall cash profit since Jul-14 was 81.47% and YTD was 31.85%
