October 2015 Portfolio

Month of October
This month’s numbers was mixed up with the September post because that post was done later than expected. But nonetheless the overall effect is the same. The direction of market these few weeks are quite volatile without a clear uptrend or downtrend. So basically it’s a wait and see type of market.

Stocks

I have been selling weekly stock options as a means to get some money when I have no idea where the market will be heading. Apple seems like a cool option to be looking into with big open interest and an acceptable premium. While it seems like a good idea, one must always take note on what the worst case scenario can be (like having too many contracts without sufficient margin to hold those contracts). Using this method

Here are the contracts which I have done since 25th Aug. It’s kind of like getting a weekly dividend without owning a stock. But it is essential you know what to do if the option is exercised. Otherwise, it would be a disaster to sort through, believe me… I had that scenario last month which lead to the huge loss.

Options on Futures

This month, I have been doing a lot more spread positions as a means for reducing risks. I mainly focus on vertical spreads to help me reduce the risks. I had also attempted a rollover trade for the first time as I believed that oil would not rise to $75. But the reality of rollover trades means you need to have conviction that the market movement will only be temporary. If you don’t, you are going to face a bigger loss than you could have imagined because of the double up of positions.

The net effect of October was positive. I still have contracts for E-mini S&P, Gold and Natural Gas set to expire in the next 1-2 months as of this writing.
